How We Started

My first interest in banknotes came about in 1990, when as a teenager the Series E George Stephenson Five Pound note came into circulation. In many ways, this felt completely alien, as I had only seen Wellington fivers up to that point. I sat comparing the two notes and realised that bar a change in size, brighter colours, and a new image of HM Queen Elizabeth II, most other things on the note were the same. From this point forward I was fascinated by the evolution of British Banknotes.

I am a collector at heart and always collected the latest stamp releases from the local Post Office when they came out. This hobby turned into a small business in 2016 when I started to sell stamps on eBay. Almost immediately I realised I could sell my notes as well, which was a good way to earn some money to expand my collection. Over the years I built up a good portfolio of regular customers, but the fees on eBay continued to rise. I am a fellow collector who wants to offer good value to my customers, and I can’t do that by only selling via eBay. 18% of my earnings went to eBay as fees in 2023, which ultimately meant customers had to pay more. I had also seen an increase in people reaching out to me asking if I would buy their collections. This is not easy as eBay wants people to sell through their site and not make private deals. The natural step was to set up the Black & Underwood website so I could continue to sell British Banknotes at a fair price whilst also providing a service to buy collections from those wishing to sell. And so, in 2024 the Black & Underwood online store was launched.
